A Simple Plain Account – March 8th

“Whosoever believes in him…” – John 3:16

“But those who do what is true come to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that their deeds have been done in God.” – John 3:21

I shoveled the driveway and walk once more this morning. I, like you, have lost count of the times this winter where we’ve performed this sacred act of ritual asphalt & concrete cleansing.

Not too long ago, I begrudgingly did this chore. I knew it had to be done. I was the one in the family most likely to take on this feat.

I also put it into the point system. I was racking up points of things I do around the house. Surely, my shoveling should count for something. I should get good and effusive “thank yous” from Megan and Fiona.

Expectations are the pathway to resentment.

My perspective is different now. I see my shoveling now as a spiritual gift. Please don’t laugh. When I shovel with the joy that I have just made my wife’s morning experience a little bit easier because her van is ready to safely pull onto the road of the day with my daughter, I realize it’s not about points. It’s certainly not about getting a thank you.

A gift is a grace with no strings attached.

When we begin the morning by graciously shoveling the driveway of our souls, perhaps we’ve made it a bit easier for God to drive us out into the world with a clear mind and open heart.
